1914 (Taisho 3)
The Teramae family has been a merchant family in front of the Senkoji temple in Yamashiro, Kaga, since the Meiji period, producing and selling miso and soy sauce. With the supply of ceramic material from the kiln of his uncle Kitade Uyomon (potters Kitade Tojiro and Fujio’s master), the founder Tamekichi started the business of painting and selling Kutani-ware.
1934 (Showa 9)
Eiichi exhibited his work at the Chicago World's Fair. Eiichi, the son-in-law of Tamekichi , opens a branch office of "Seizando" in Shibuya, Tokyo, in the Hyakkendana district. Later on, the Great Kanto Earthquake destroys the Hyakkendana district, and Eiichi re-opens Seizando in Yamashiro.
1945 (Showa 20)
Tameichi, the eldest son of the Teramae family, and his brother Eiichi founded Kutani Bitoen, Co.Ltd Soon after, Tameichi, a graduate of Tokyo University of Art and Design, became an independent artist. Kutani Bitouen means garden of beautiful Kutani ware.
1955 (Showa 30)
Eiichi took over Kutani-Bitouen. At the request of his customers, he actively made old Chinese blue and white porcelain and copies of old Japanese pottery and Daishoji Imari wares. His careful and sincere work was recognized by Sazo Idemitsu, the owner of the Idemitsu Museum of Art, who commissioned him to make copies of Pottery Yoshida's works for his company's commemorative gifts.
1955-1965 (1955-1940)
The demand for hand-ground fabric was also high, and it was exclusively sought after by artists. Eiichi was commended by the Minister of International Trade and Industry as a "Person of Merit in the Traditional Craft Industry". Eiichi was in good health until he was 93 years old and built a studio with a residence to employ the handicapped, and was awarded an award equivalent of today’s “Orders of the Sacred Treasure” by the emperor, and the Kaga City Cultural Service Award in 1973.
1987 (1987)
His eldest son Hideo (who worked for heavy industry in Tokyo) took over the business and also became the chairman of the Kutani-ware Association in Kaga City. Hideo (Artist name, Eisho) introduced modern management to Kutani Bitoen, including the rebuilding of the showroom and the relocation of the kilns, while his wife Mitsuko designed Kutani ware that emphasized the enjoyment of daily life based on tradition.
1992 (Heisei 4)
When His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince (Emperor Konami) visited Yamashiro-spa, he personally purchased a gold brocade teacup from one of the excellent Kutani wares displayed at Shiroganeya Ryokan.
The Maeda family, former lords of Kaga, purchased wedding gift for their three children from Kutani Bitouen. We also received an order for a commemorative gift by his mother (Bon Bonnieres).
The former Chancellor of West Germany, Mr. Weizseker, visited us in our showroom and they purchased many Kutani ware from us.
When the Minister of Education visited Kaga City, he stopped by our showroom and purchased various Old style kutani-ware as well as Pottery Yoshida’s copies some souvenirs for European countries.
In 2013.
After Hideo's death, his wife Mitsuko took over, and his son Nobuya took early retirement from his company in 2015 to begin supporting the company in a new direction.
January 2019 (2019)
Eisyo Teramae's eldest son, Nobuya, became the company's representative director and assumed the name of the fourth generation.
